Physical Data

Geographic Coordinates: 27°09'N, 119°35'E, eastern tip of the Selbizan Peninsula, 9 km from the mostly-frozen Black Ocean.

Climate: Permanent winter, as it is throughout the rest of the world. Depending on how near a Sky Furnace is in the atmosphere, or how many there are, temperatures can range range from -45°F to 40°F, though it isn't unheard of for them to go much lower. Typical weather includes regular rainshowers or snowfall, depending on temperature, which may vary considerably from week to week. Electrical storms are almost constant, possibly due Sky Furnace-generated atmospheric phenomena.

Einheit City's structural age is unknown. Most archaeological estimates suggest the foundational structures of the city and its wall were set in place no later than 7000 years before being discovered by Frey's settlers, and could be as old as 10,000 years. Little evidence has been left to provide information about the Architects, the civilization that built it, or their fate. Despite its age, Einheit City's foundational structures and technological artifacts were preserved in almost entirely serviceable condition.

A heavily fortified 70-storie wall known as the “Vorhang” surrounds the city’s surface perimeter as a giant Ministry installation. Due to outward land growth being limited by the Vorhang, most average buildings on the city surface (the Midcity) are at least 100 stories tall, with the exception of the Toride at the city's center, which currently stands at 13 miles tall. The Ministry maintains a heavy presence at the Vorhang and does not permit free travel to or from the city.

The Midcity covers the surface area, being the main cluster of sectors where most of the city's outer classers dwell. At its center is the Toride. The UniClass population resides in the lower three quarters of the Toride, while the uppermost quarter is occupied by Ministry Headquarters. Higher above that is the Heart Machine's housing unit, which is only accessable to the High Ministry.

Below the rest of Einheit is the Undercity, which is by far the largest region, consisting of thousands of ancient street tunnels and vast hollows, many of which are yet to be fully explored.

Population

Total population: 27,750,500~

43% UniClass (consists of over 99% of Einheit City's overall hybrid population)

57% Outer Class (55% mammal, 32% reptile, 23% avian, 12% other)

Religious Demographics: Religion is officially outlawed, having been declared divisive and dangerous to Unity. Thus, accurate estimates are impossible to determine since many individuals hide or deny their religious affiliations when surveyed. However, estimates on the street suggest that at anywhere from half to two-thirds of outer classers hold some form of religious/spiritual faith. UniClassers on the other hand are considered almost entirely atheistic.

Government

Government Philosophies: Unity science, influenced by select aspects of Neo-Songun military socialism, and Uni-Juche ideals of social class autarky and self-reliance makes up the core of Einheit City government stance. Although Einheit City's politics are heavily socialist, private enterprise is tolerated by the state so long as it does not conflict with Unity ideals or threaten the balance of power.

Current Administration: Chancellor Mara Kadesh, a wolfhawk hybrid, is the city's chief executive, elected into office shortly after Operation Boreas. Only UniClassers were permitted to vote in her election. Although Comrade Kadesh's administration seems heavily active in directing city affairs, the outer class widely regards Einheit City's civilian government to be nothing more than puppets of the Ministry in order to provide a more charismatic voice-box for Unity propaganda, and to maintain the illusion of democracy.

Foreign Relations: N/A. All other major states were annihilated by Einheit City during the final days of the Species Wars. According to the Ministry, Einheit City is currently under siege by surviving Colonial forces based in the surrounding Nightlands, hence free travel to and from the city is heavily restricted to only Ministry personnel and possibly select UniClassers. Purebreds are virtually never permitted to travel to or from Einheit City.

Technology

Upon its discovery, Einheit City was found to have several well-preserved stores of ancient, yet extremely advanced Architect Era technology, far more powerful than anything previously encountered. For a time, most of it was back-engineered to produce new forms of hardware and to upgrade existing machinery for the greater good. But gradually, the Ministry began to confiscate and hoard such resources for its own use, and for the benefit of the hybrid UniClass, leaving purebreds by and large technologically destitute. Practically all Architect technology or data with any potential military application was taken at an early stage in the Ministry's creation, and used to advance the combat methods and strategy of its personnel, as well as obvious advances in defense technology.

While the UniClass has access to high technology, the outer class is left to cobble together whatever it can from more primitive computer machinery or obsolete hardware.

Einheit City's technology holds a particularly anachronistic blend. Just as more modernized things like flying aerodyne cars, hoverdyne autos, gravity-manipulation devices, and moving holographs are commonplace, so are steam engines, analogue tech, gunpowder, radio, propeller-driven vehicles and combat blades, which are just as widely used and as effective as ever.

Life Support & Power

The Architect relic known as the Heart Machine provides public energy. According to what little information of it has been made public, raw energy is generated in the reactor's core, and then charged into E-Fluid that is pumped through a citywide network of vein-like tubes and pipes. Electrical receivers then collect the E-Fluid’s energy charge as it pumps through the area, which then distribute the electrical power throughout their respective buildings. E-Fluid that has been sapped of its power charge is then directed back to the Heart Machine, where it is recharged and redistributed back into the city. E-Fluid may also be used as a basic flammable heating liquid, and has an extremely long burn life, at least 10 times that of petroleum. Once its flame has exhausted its energy charge, the E-Fluid is useless, and should either be discarded or pumped back into a Heart Machine vein to be recharged. The Toride by far consumes the most E-Fluid, while the Midcity and Undercity receive far less, and are often subject to random shortages and dry periods.

Roughly 85% of food consumed is provided in mechanically automated warehouse-sized biotech factories, where synthesized produce and meat items are rapidly manufactured in mass quantities. A handful of UniClass companies approved by the Ministry occasionally conduct hunting and harvesting Nightlands wildlife and edible fungi in order to bring in further foodstuffs, though it is a very dangerous industry due to the Nightlander siege, and the sheer hostility of the natural environment itself. Nightlands-derived meat items are often expensive compared to synthesized alternatives, and are rarely found among the outer class, save for the Underlords and their servants who acquire such wealth through extortion of their fellow purebreds.

While foodstuffs are more expensive now than in the past, the Ministry does ensure that the basic nutritional needs of all UniClassers are met to ensure a healthy and productive society, and for this reason much UniClass-consumed food is found in form of state-distributed rations. The Ministry is also known to regularly distribute rations to the outer class as well, though in reality these supposed acts of generosity and concern are done for the sake of propaganda, as many of the rations are of poor quality, expired, or in limited quantities.

The Toride holds several communal hydroponic gardens and greenhouses which produce a fair amount of organic produce. Though a few scattered organic food labs exist here and there among the outer class, yet are often controlled by Underlord crime syndicates who use rare, self-produced organic food sold at high prices as a lucrative source of income. The outer class's nearly constant state of hunger has given way to a thriving black market for higher-quality and organic food, which many Undercity crime syndicates are heavily active in.

Vehicles & Transportation

For land transportation, wheeled vehicles and hoverdynes (hovering automobiles) are the most common, with the latter being far more expensive and found mostly among the UniClass. A network of steam locomotives provide public transportation in the MidCity and Undercity, though some are in ill repair, leading to frequent breakdowns and delays. The Toride has its own interior transit system, mostly consisting of mechanical lifts, antigrav platforms, and high-speed elevators, due to its vertical environment.

Einheit City makes heavy use of VTOL technology in all areas; huge skyships, hovering freight barges, gyro-thopters, and aerodynes of various sizes and models are all very common. A few past attempts were made by outer classers at developing personal flight vehicles affordable enough for the mass market, yet due to increasing economic hardship among purebreds, the projects never took off. Today, most newer and efficient flight technology is accessible only to the UniClass, or monopolized by the Ministry in more militarized forms, while air vehicles available to outer classers are of considerable inferior or outdated quality, when they can even be afforded in the first place.

Fuel sources are wide and varied. Fossil fuels are becoming more expensives, due to the city's Nightlands-based oil rigs allegedly being under constant threat from purebred guerillas. Hence the use of steam, electricity, hydrogen, electro-saline, and even E-Fluid fuels engines are increasingly common.

Information & Communications

Digital technology is rampant, varying in style from one sector to another. In the UniClass-populated Toride, extremely advanced digital computing devices, analytical engines and data networks are found in nearly every household, whereas informational machinery available in outer class zones such as the Midcity and Undercity is often outdated or in ill repair. Several illegal data networks do exist, though are rarely found on the same channels more than once, often having to shut down after a short period of operation so as to not draw the Ministry's attention. Outdated forms of purebred-owned internet is widespread among the MidCity and Undercity, though only a few are able to afford high quality hardware, and those are almost always tied to the Underlords who are normally the only non-UniClass entities capable of such technology.

Public media is widely available via radio and telescreen technology, though all networks are tightly controlled Ministry, and ensure that only the Ministry's point of view is presented. Likewise, major press is entirely controlled by the Ministry-loyal UniClass, with the exception of a few underground outer class publications that occasionally show up on the streets.

Robotics

Einheit City has always taken pride in never replacing flesh with machine unless absolutely necessary. During the Species Wars this became an unexpected advantage, when Colonies who had grown too dependent upon machines or cybernetics to triumph in combat found themselves crumpling at Einheit City's walls from the Ministry's use of EMP weapons, which had limited damage on the Ministry's own biomechanical Architect-influenced hardware. The Einheit Civil Militia, to some degree, did make use of combat robotics to fill in its own gaps during the Species Wars, though these were all vaulted or melted for scrap after the ECM's disbanding following the destruction of the Colonies.

Still, robotics and cybernetic prosthetics do serve some limited purpose, so long as they do not take the place of organic strength or mind unless absolutely necessary. Task-oriented helper AI's can be found throughout both the UniClass and outer class, in varying levels of quality. Cleaning bots, programmed construction bots, repair machines, and other household robots can be found in both social classes.

Intelligent anthropomorphized bots and androids capable of blending in with the organic population, such as those seen in popular science-fiction holofilms or in mad Colonial cyborg supersoldier projects, rarely, if ever, exist, due to legal restrictions, and widely being viewed as impractical or having greater risks than benefits. An intelligent AI can theoretically have the same capacity for thoughts and emotion as a living being, which means the same potential for violent rebellion. The problem lay in the fact that thinking machines have no DNA in order to be easily tracked by the Ministry like a living person. For this reason, the Ministry has a small yet terrifyingly efficient division of machine hunters tasked specifically with tracking and eliminating intelligent machines, due to the percieved threat they pose.

Additionally, the Ministry widely promotes a philosophy of enhancing the mind and body, to a militant degree where intelligent machines are viewed as a potential threat to a healthy society. For this reason, among others, advanced AI has not had any noteworthy affect on history or current events, and its influence on society and history can be considered as neglegible as any 3 AM infomercial appliance.

As one might expect, robotics seen in use in the MidCity and Undercity are often obsolete models, with a lesser number of more efficient bots produced on a much smaller scale in the attics of independent engineers or back-alley cyber outfitters. One curious note is how the Undercity and parts of the Midcity have become habitats for homeless or otherwise castaway bots. Although they have very limited AI's which were programmed for simple tasks, these robots have been observed to behave like artificial wildlife. Several witness accounts exist of ownerless robots building useless nests or congregating with bots of similar models, while fleeing from or chasing off robots of other models. Most are comparitively feeble machinery, and tend to shyly avoid direct contact with citizens, though some have been observed to actually attack or mimic-attack intruders.

Robots found inside the Toride or otherwise serving the UniClass do not differ that much in function and purpose from purebred-operated machines. The difference is simply that of quality. Since the UniClass has access to greater funds and better materials, Toride bots are simply more durable, efficient, and reliable than their outer class-maintained counterparts. Of course there are some exceptions, the UniClass will always have a greater percentage of higher quality machines than the outer class.
